This summer, BCYF took an important moment to listen—inviting community-based organizations to share their experiences with the Summer 2026 pre-cycle application process. What we heard was both affirming and energizing.
Across the survey responses, organizations overwhelmingly shared that BCYF’s application process is working as intended: it is clear, accessible, values-aligned, and designed with the realities of grassroots organizations in mind.
Applicants feel supported and respected.
Nearly all respondents shared that they were satisfied or very satisfied with the clarity, fairness, and accessibility of the application. This reflects BCYF’s continued commitment to reducing unnecessary barriers and honoring applicants’ time, capacity, and expertise.
Support systems are making a real difference.
Organizations highlighted the value of BCYF’s applicant supports—such as the RocketHub Resource Guide, information sessions, and one-on-one coaching. More than four out of five respondents said these supports were helpful or extremely helpful in reducing barriers to applying. These tools are not just resources; they are part of how BCYF shows up as a partner, not just a funder.
Early decisions matter—and they matter a lot.
One of the strongest messages from the survey was the importance of early funding decisions. Nearly every respondent shared that receiving decisions by mid-December is critical to their organization’s ability to plan, hire staff, strengthen programming, recruit youth, and build partnerships. For many, early notification means moving from uncertainty to readiness—and launching summer programs with confidence instead of urgency.
BCYF stands out in the funding landscape.
Most applicants reported applying to multiple funders, yet a majority said BCYF’s application is easier or much easier than others. Even more notably, nearly one-third of respondents shared that BCYF is the only funder they are applying to—underscoring the trust organizations place in BCYF and the alignment they feel with its approach.
Values alignment is a shared foundation.
Every respondent affirmed that BCYF’s funding priorities—equity, grassroots leadership, and youth voice—align with their organization’s mission and values. This alignment is not incidental; it reflects years of intentional relationship-building and a shared belief that communities hold the wisdom needed to support young people.
Why This Matters
These results tell a powerful story: when funding processes are designed with care, equity, and partnership at the center, they strengthen—not strain—the organizations doing critical work for Baltimore’s young people. BCYF’s approach is helping organizations plan earlier, operate more sustainably, and focus more fully on what matters most: youth, families, and communities.
