BCYF is thrilled to highlight Women of Color Online’s feature, “10 Years and Counting at The Be. Org”, showcasing the powerful leadership of Tonee Lawson, Founder and Executive director of BCYF grantee The Be. Org. For ten years, The Be. Org has helped Black and Brown youth reimagine their futures through hands-on leadership programs, community-building, and civic engagement. The story shines a light on how Tonee’s own journey—grounded in Baltimore, youth development, and service—has helped shape a trusted organization where young people are encouraged to show up as their full selves.
“Whether we’re connecting the dots for our youngest learners to show them that science is a part of everyday life, leading cybersecurity workshops, or teaching high school students to code while preparing them for college and career pathways, our goal is to build confidence, expose youth to new possibilities, and help them “be” whoever and whatever they dream to be.” — Tonee Lawson
When young people have access to safe, affirming spaces—especially those led by people who reflect and respect their identities—they begin to see their voice and power differently. The Be. Org’s decade-long impact speaks to the importance of consistency, care, and culturally responsive leadership in youth development.
