What will it take to build a better future for Baltimore’s youth?
In a powerful and personal op-ed published in Maryland Matters, BCYF Board Chair Larry Simmons Jr. shares his vision — grounded in lived experience, deep community ties, and decades of work in youth development.
“As a lifelong resident of West Baltimore,” he writes, “I know Baltimore’s young people are brilliant, resilient, and full of promise. But I also know the long, painful history of how systemic racism, redlining, and disinvestment have shaped their lives.”
In this must-read piece, Simmons urges city leaders to go beyond surface-level support and make lasting, meaningful investments in grassroots, Black- and brown-led organizations that have always been there for Baltimore’s youth — often with few resources and little recognition.
“While large organizations have their place,” he writes, “the work that changes lives happens closest to the ground.”
