The Baltimore Children and Youth Fund’s third annual Gathering brought together partners from across the youth ecosystem for a day filled with learning, joy, and community rooted leadership. This year’s theme, Roots and Reach, invited all of us to reflect on the foundations that shape our work and the collective strength that carries it forward.
At BCYF, we understand that strong youth development requires much more than funding alone. It flourishes when there are relationships, shared leadership, and opportunities for organizations to grow their skills and capacity. The Gathering was created to nurture that growth. It is our yearly moment to celebrate achievements, hear from youth and community leaders, and strengthen the bonds that support transformative work throughout Baltimore.
One message that stayed with us came from Dyon Davidson of Beadly Speaking, a Planning Committee member whose session brought joy and grounding to many participants. She wrote afterward to thank the team for creating space where she could both contribute and grow. In her reflection, she offered a beautiful reminder of what matters most in this work. As she shared, “It is great to receive grant funding but it is even greater to be able to continue building capacity.” Her words reflect the heart of BCYF’s purpose to strengthen leaders from within so they can reach even more youth across Baltimore.
Throughout the day, the Gathering highlighted the brilliance and leadership already present across our city. Many of the sessions were Youth led sessions, with young people guiding conversations about power, possibility, and the future of Baltimore’s youth ecosystem. Their insight and clarity helped ground the convening in real experiences and reminded us that youth leadership is not symbolic. It is essential.
Most of the sessions were also designed and facilitated by our grantee partners. These are the community rooted organizations that nurture young people every day. They brought forward practical tools, cultural knowledge, healing approaches, and creative strategies that reflected both their lived expertise and their commitment to Baltimore. Their leadership demonstrated that sustainable change comes from those closest to the work.
These Youth led sessions and grantee led sessions created a powerful atmosphere of collaboration and shared learning. Most of the day’s workshops were facilitated by our grantee partners who offered deep community insight and real world strategies that support the growth of Baltimore’s youth. We were also proud to create a space where many young people were able to exercise their voice and teach the adults who serve them exactly what they need. Sessions such as Power Reimagined: Youth Voice as Infrastructure, Not Afterthought showed the strength of youth leadership in action as young people led conversations about belonging, identity, and system change in their own words. Participants explored wellness practices, policy advocacy, digital strategy, culturally grounded youth development, organizational growth, and the many ways leaders can strengthen their work while caring for themselves and their communities. Every room held a sense of purpose and possibility.
The Gathering continues to remind us that Baltimore’s progress is rooted in community and shaped by the brilliance of the people who serve young people every day. We remain deeply grateful to every presenter, every committee member, every youth leader, and every partner who contributed their energy and passion to this year’s event.
BCYF remains committed to expanding opportunity, strengthening capacity, and investing in the organizations and leaders who help Baltimore’s young people live, thrive, and lead. Together we continue to grow. Our roots are strong and our reach is expanding. The future is already taking shape in the hands of our youth and the communities that support them.
