Program Name: Restoring Family Safety and Security to Child Witnesses of Intimate Partner Violence
Award Amount: $83,046 Partner(s): Baltimore Community Mediation Center, Art with a Heart, Baltimore Clayworks
Project Description: House of Ruth Maryland (HRM) leads the fight to end intimate partner violence in the Baltimore area by confronting attitudes and beliefs to interrupt and reduce future violence through the Gateway abuse intervention program, while simultaneously providing safety and trauma reduction services, like shelter and child and family therapy, for children/ youth and their non-abusive parents.
A new Child and Family Therapist will be hired to provide evidence based therapies, like Attachment Bio-behavioral Catchup, proven to help young victims recreate secure attachment and a sense of safety with their non-abusive parent. For older youth, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy allows young people to understand and heal from the trauma they witnessed or experienced. Resiliency and healthier parent interactions are critical to healing and will be provided through parent-child art classes conducted by Art with a Heart and Baltimore Clayworks. Therapy and art services will be provided to both the children of violence survivors living in HRM’s Shelter program and the children of the abusive partner participants in our Gateway program. In addition, because the trauma of violence and homelessness often creates heightened tension and conflict, this proposal aims to build resiliency through increasing conflict management skills. Baltimore Community Mediation Center will provide conflict de-escalation training to Shelter and Gateway staff, as well as to cohorts of adult Shelter victims and youth who witnessed the violence.
