Program Name: Girls Rise in Park Heights

Project Description: Girl Scouts of Central Maryland’s (GSCM’s) guiding principles in offering comprehensive, project-based learning opportunities and program design for Girls Rise in Park Heights are: (1) youth leadership through a youth centered enterprise, and a service learning project; (2) academic enrichment in reading and math with collaboration with 3 schools’ faculty, plus after-school robotics; (3) youth centered life skills through sessions on relational aggression and self-esteem; (4) youth centered health/wellness/recreation through physical activity project/Step competition. GSCM utilizes several delivery models that will serve 500 girls, including small group sessions, overnight camp, community-led troops, robotics teams, field trips, and girl-led community impact projects. GSCM will create inter-generational ties/mentorship by a) Step choreography/costume design and STEP competition, with practice sessions during the year; b) stipends to community residents to serve as troop leaders or robotics coaches (training provided by GSCM); and c) entrepreneurship training to launch the iconic cookie sale program.
