Free for All Baltimore

Free for All Baltimore

Program Name: Free for All at the Rec

Award Amount: $20,000

Project Description: Free for All Baltimore will provide for the play of children and young people in northeast Baltimore who want and need a place to be. The initiative will create free, open and authorized youth-led spaces and provide healthy food and open-ended materials for play relevant for children aged from pre-K into high school. Within these spaces, children and young people decide what is important about their play, develop relationships with each other, and learn about themselves and their communities in an environment staffed by adult volunteers and paid youth interns who will say “yes” to their ideas and interests. Free for All Baltimore is a child-led community building project. The focus of the Free for All at the Rec initiative will be to open, staff, and fund programming at the currently closed North Harford Park Rec Center.

The program will provide staffed free open play programming and provision of healthy food once per school week for at least 20 students per program day from one school in September 2018. It will also provide staffed free open play programming and provision of healthy food once per school week (October 2018) and three times per school week (starting in November 2018) for at least 30 students per program day from two schools from October 2018 through February 2019. It will also provide staffed free open play programming and provision of healthy food three times per school week for at least 40 students per program day from three schools from March 2019 through May 2019.
