Award Amount: $165,382.50
Project Description: Violence is the leading cause of injury, disability, and premature death for African-American males ages 15-24. BTNF provides a solution in an after-school program that engages youth in music education and performance to provide expressive therapy and inspiration for creating greater life opportunities. BTNF is proposing to implement the Music for F.U.N. (Fundamental Understanding of Notes) and Career Development program at three high schools in Baltimore City to serve 60 youth. In this program, youth are immersed in the world of musical art, STEM, and exposure to music industry careers. Youth learn African drumming, piano and guitar, songwriting and production while working on collaborative projects designed to enhance their critical thinking and writing skills. The program will serve 20 students per day at each site: Edmondson-Westside High School, Baltimore City College High School and Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.
