Program Name: A Revolutionary Summer 2019
Award Amount: $20,000
Project Description: A Revolutionary Summer (ARS) is an intensive critical reading and writing program dedicated to shifting harmful narratives about Black girls through literature, art and self-inquiry. For eight Sundays in the summer, up to 20 daughters gather to discuss the creative works of consequential Black women artists; to learn techniques to master their thoughts; to fortify their self-esteem; to apply self-loving strategies; and to practice yoga. They do so under the guidance of local authors, community activists, and teachers.
ARS’s mission is to present Black girls with authentic representations of themselves (in art and literature) and to simultaneously convince them (through yoga and self-inquiry) that they are more than those representations.
