The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Riots are the cry of the unheard." If that maxim is true, Baltimore children, youth, and young adults were crying out long before the 2015 killing of Freddie Gray, Jr. sparked demonstrations and unrest in the city.
The fund, proposed by Baltimore City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young after the unrest of 2015, and approved by voters the following year, will provide taxpayer dollars to organizations that work with the city’s young people.
The first grants from a $12 million fund to help children and youth in Baltimore are now being decided.
